Living Science: Tula State University Students' Practice
The first summer session at the Polytechnic Educational and Health Complex has concluded.
During this time, Tula State University students completed an intensive practical session and gained truly valuable experience that cannot be replaced by classroom instruction alone. Students from three majors - land-surveyors, botanists, and zoologists - participated in the work, and for each of them, the internship became an important stage in their professional growth.
According to Yelena Mikhaylovna Volkova, Head of the Biology Department at the Institute of Natural Sciences, the students studied flora in a variety of natural settings - in forests, meadows, along the banks of the Oka and Vashana rivers, and at the Polytechnic base. They determined the structure and reserves of phytomass in various ecosystems and mastered the skills of geobotany, bryology, lichenology, and soil science. They also learned to recognize and memorize the Latin names of plants, mosses, lichens, and fungi.
Educational meetings and classes with visiting experts were a vibrant complement to the internship. Sergey Nikolayevich Lysenkov, Associate Professor of the Department of Evolutionary Biology at Lomonosov Moscow State University, delivered a fascinating lecture on “The History of Life on Earth”, and Victoriya Vladimirovna Teleganova, PhD in Biology, conducted practical classes on mosses.
These sessions help students not only reinforce their theoretical knowledge but also see living nature in its diversity, feel like researchers, and take another confident step toward their future profession.
