Of Tula to the International Students
On September 25, the Department of General Theoretical Disciplines and Russian as a Foreign Language at the Institute of International Education at Tula State University held the sixth Russian language quiz for international students, "Tula. History and Modernity." This traditional quiz was timed to coincide with Tula Region Day and the Hero City of Tula, celebrated in September. This quiz was also a part of the “Discover Russia with “Znaniye”" project, aimed at fostering respect for Russia's traditions and values, as well as supporting the comfortable integration of international students into Russia's educational and sociocultural environment.
The international students from universities in the Tula region became the participants of this event. For the third time, the quiz was held in a blended format, meaning some participants had the option to complete all stages online in the university's online information and educational environment. Participants were given one hour to complete each task of varying difficulty.
Faculty from the Department of General Theoretical Disciplines and Russian as a Foreign Language developed 35 questions related to significant events in the history of the Tula Region, sightseeing attractions and interesting locations in the city and region, and famous Tula brands. These included both close-ended questions, requiring students to choose one correct answer from several options, and open-ended questions, requiring international students to provide a detailed and, most importantly, competent answer in Russian.
The questions were developed taking into account the key goals of the Russian Federation's humanitarian policy abroad. Therefore, the quiz was designed not only to develop and strengthen the international students' Russian language skills, but also to introduce them to the culture of great Russia, promote domestic achievements in various fields, and generate interest in Tula as a city with an ancient history, a heroic past, and a truly comfortable urban environment, high-tech industrial enterprises, and a modern cultural and educational space.
Seventy-six international students from neighboring and distant countries took part in the quiz. The organizers will announce the results by October 16, and the winners and awardees will receive diplomas and valuable gifts from the Institute of International Education at Tula State University.
