World of the Russian Language in Profession

From October 31 to November 4, at Russian Language Institute of Peoples' Friendship University of Russia –RUDN University (Moscow), with the support of “Russkiy Mir Foundation”, the final stage of the I International Olympiad for International Students "Russian in Profession" was held.

The Olympiad was organized for foreign participants from the universities of Russia, Belarus, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, the LPR and the DPR, studying in the areas of medicine, engineering, ecology, law, economics, humanities, and social sciences.

The competition consisted of 2 rounds: online and face-to-face. In the online round of the Olympiad, participants were asked to take a combined test of 40 questions on popular science texts, including lexical and grammar tasks, questions for understanding the content of the text, vocabulary tasks, and syntactic and grammatical constructions based on the material of the scientific style of speech in the chosen specialty .

At the first stage, Tula State University was represented by 7 international students from Iraq, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. According to the results of the first stage, Pevistamo Abdulvobova (Tajikistan) and Mustafa Abdulhalem (Iraq) passed to the second stage, scoring more than 90 points in the online test. The students are taking “General medicine” program - Mustafa is in his fourth year, and Pevistamo is in the second one.

On October 31, the students arrived at RUDN University, accompanied by the director of Institute of International Education Olga Gladkova, to take part in face-to-face stage of the Olympiad. During the second stage, a separate educational program was organized for those accompanying the students in the format of workshops, dedicated to the issues of socio-cultural adaptation of international students to the conditions of living and studying in Russia and the methodology of teaching Russian as a foreign language.

In total, 135 foreign participants from 26 universities of Russia and neighboring countries took part in the second stage of the Olympiad.

This stage included a variety of tasks that made it possible to evaluate all types of speech activity of foreign participants: from demonstrating team's video-presentations and completing a written task (essay) on a professionally oriented topic to solving cases in the format of a discussion and spontaneous individual presentations. And in the evenings, excursion and sports programs were organized for the participants of the Olympiad.

Over several eventful days of the Olympiad, international students of Tula State University not only took part in a competitive struggle, but also had the opportunity to communicate with students from all over the world.

According to the results of the final stage of the Olympiad, Tula State University became the winner of the Olympiad “Russian Language in Profession” (medical field) in “Creativity” nomination, and also took the 6th place out of 26 in the competition of universities’ promo videos – team's video-presentations.

As director of Institute of International Education Olga Gladkova notes: “Holding the 1st International Olympiad for International Students “Russian in Profession” is especially important now, as it is aimed at promoting and strengthening the positions of the Russian language outside of Russia. We are pleased with the results and will improve our position in the future.”

Mustafa Abdulhalem: “I believe that this Olympiad is a great chance not only to improve my spoken Russian language and grammar, but also to place an important emphasis on medical vocabulary and professionally oriented terms, which are so necessary for real communication with patients.”

Pevistamo Abdulvobova: “For me, this is an opportunity to develop my Russian language through discussion on medical topics, since it is the basis of communication culture with patients, something I need so much for my professional development as a doctor in Russia.”
