When Surgeons Have a Competition

Students of Medical Institute of Tula State University took part in a district stage of the Moscow (All-Russian) Student Olympiad in Surgery named after Academician M.I. Perelman.

The competition was held from December 8 to 10 at Ryazan State Medical University. Twenty teams took part in it, more than six hundred people in total. Tula State University was represented by medical students of different years of education.
The participants of the competition were welcomed by the Chief Federal Inspector for Ryazan Region, Mikhail Borisovich Maksimov, who noted the colossal importance of such qualifying Olympiads for the development of good specialists in the country. The Minister of Health of Ryazan Region, Alexander Sergeevich Pshennikov, recalled that the district stage of the Moscow (All-Russian) Student Olympiad in Surgery named after Academician M.I. Perelman was held for the third time at Ryazan State Medical University, but for the first time representatives of practical healthcare were invited to the jury.

At the Olympiad, teams from leading medical universities had the opportunity to demonstrate their surgical skills in the accreditation and simulation center equipped according to the latest global trends and in the training operating room WetLab, which is close to the real conditions of the operating unit. They competed in performing theoretical and practical tasks, conducting operational cases of various levels of complexity. The students talked to prominent scientists and practicing surgeons.

The program of the Olimpiad included competitions in vascular, thoracic, abdominal, plastic and microvascular surgery, as well as in urology, coloproctology, endovideosurgery, neurosurgery, eye microsurgery, operative gynecology, resuscitation and surgical dentistry.

Tula State University team included students from University Surgical Club, which was created at Medical Institute in 2020.

“We have prepared well,”  sixth-year student Igor Chulnikov said. “The most important thing is that all members of our team showed their best results in comparison with the results in preparation, despite the unfamiliar atmosphere and competitive stress. This is a great progress! We watched more experienced colleagues doing manipulations, we listened to the comments of the jury, which means that next year Tula State University team will perform even more professionally.

Igor participated in competitions of this level not for the first time, and he noted that the main thing at such events is communication with students from other universities, the exchange of successful practices. At the district stage of the Moscow (All-Russian) Student Olympiad in Surgery named after Academician M.I. Perelman the team of Tula State University Surgical Club took the seventeenth place, gained new serious experience and will go on with professional training.
