TulaHack records

Almost forty cases from two dozen successful companies, sixty participating teams from twenty Russian regions - and the traditional forty hours to create a cool product. Developer competitions at Tula State University are a separate world that is worth immersing yourself in.

TulaHack, the tenth interregional hackathon of Tula State University, surpassed all the previous ones, as an anniversary event should. A record number of participants, organisers and partners gathered at the site in the BioChemTechCentre of the university, even more joined the hackathon online. This was noted by TulSU Rector Oleg Aleksandrovich Kravchenko who came to greet the teams personally on the opening day of TulaHack, 26 April.

- We have formed a cool community of IT specialists united by Tula State University,’ he said. - I thank the university's partners, who are becoming more numerous every year. The cases you have proposed have interested the teams, of which there are so many today. Having held hackathons since 2018, we know that for the IT sphere it is important not only to give lectures and practical classes but to constantly search for and implement new forms, such as hackathons, sports programming school and others. Here students can demonstrate both their own professional skills and their ability to work in a team. And employers are not just evaluating their projects, but are already thinking about who will come to work for them tomorrow.

“Hackathons are a special world that is a pleasure to live in, because every time you discover something new and gain invaluable experience”, said Aleksey Alekseyevich Sychugov, Director of the Institute of Applied Mathematics and Computer Sciences of TulSU. He wished the teams:

- Don't be afraid of any tasks! Enjoy creating new things - this is the most important thing!

From Friday evening the work was in full swing. The teams saw all the cases a day before the hackathon started and were able to make a choice. However, it was not an easy one - almost forty tasks to choose from. These included weather forecasting, services for travellers, “My Pet” and “Domovoi Online” applications, interactive story generator, “Ancestral Memory project”, workout planner, questionnaire, file download manager, voice command recognition in games, and others.

- Cases do not limit the creativity of teams - most of them do not involve a wide range of implementation tools and technological stack. It is possible to integrate cases within one project, but there is no point in trying to do several projects,’ explained the moderator of the hackathon site, Deputy Director of the Institute of Applied Mathematics and Computer Science at TulSU Yelena Anatolyevna Arefyeva.

On Saturday and Sunday, TulaHack site not only hosted teams, but also activities from partners: sumo for remote robots, a master class on successful performance and self-presentation, ‘Your own cyber game’ and others.

After the final pitching, the teams presented the results of their work. The presentations took several hours, then there were evaluations and reflections of the jury, and after that the experts named the three best teams of the TulSU Anniversary Hackathon. Coincidentally, all of them participated in the competition in person and were able to receive their deserved awards directly at the TulaHack site.

1st place - KebabFury, KebabQuest project.

2nd place - Goodfellas, Gastrohab project.

3rd place - Eureka, Mood project.

A few words about the winning projects. A story quest based on artificial intelligence was presented by TulSU students united in the KebabFury team: Ivan Volodin, Alexander Shuverov, Artush Bagdasarya and Andrey Fesunov. Their main complaint to the currently existing quests is that players are limited by the scenario.

- Our quest is endless, the storyline is written by ChatGPT, Kandinskiy is responsible for the graphics, and free response input and complete freedom of action are available to player, - developers said.

The Goodfellas team also included TulSU students. They created a service where food lovers meet cooking professionals. The application for online table booking in any restaurant Gastrohab allows you to choose your favourite establishment and book a table for a convenient date and time in a matter of minutes. Developers: Vladislav Hofman, Victoria Yevdokimova, Maxim Zolotukhin, Artyom Kurochkin and Nikolay Mshetsyan.

The project of the Eureka team was remembered for its colourful presentation by TulSU student Valery Filatov, who started participating in university hackathons as a schoolboy. The team, which also included alumnus Artem Koshko, students Valeriya Zotova, Timofei Semyonov and Darya Genze, created an application for storing and creating playlists based on the Open Source method, so that users can create any playlists and everyone can add their own tracks to them. Experts appreciated this approach.
