A young scientist from Tula State University won a PhosAgro/UNESCO/IUPAC grant

PhosAgro/UNESCO/IUPAC grants to support young scientists ceremony was held at the International Green Chemistry Congress in Beijing.
Bogdan Yanovich Karlinsky, Head of the Laboratory of Chemical Conversion of Renewable Biomass and Organic Synthesis at Tula State University, graduate of the postgraduate programme at the Institute of Organic Chemistry of the Russian Academy of Sciences, is among those grant-winners.
Bogdan Yanovich's scientific research focuses on the development of furan-based materials derived from renewable plant biomass. This approach represents an important element of green chemistry oriented towards the creation of more environmentally friendly processes and materials.
‘Although furans are significant compounds for our laboratory, they can be toxic to many microorganisms by inhibiting metabolic processes,’ the scientist noted. - The goal of our project is to identify or adapt microorganisms that can survive and grow in the presence of furans, using them as a nutrient substrate and metabolising them into non-toxic derivatives - ideally water and carbon dioxide.’
The work is carried out within the framework of the strategic project ‘BioChemTech’ of the university development programme ‘Priority 2030’.
