Surgery is an art
An exciting and informative from a professional point of view event took place on February 18 at the Medical Institute of Tula State University.
What is especially valuable and important is that the senior students, who are members of the TulSU Student Surgical Club, conducted it for their younger comrades.
— We have prepared a workshop based on the All-Russian Olympiad in Surgery named after Academician M.I. Perelman, which was held last December in Yaroslavl. Our TSU Surgery Club team won the second place in the 3D Anatomy competition," said Maria Petryaeva, one of the organizers, a sixth-year student. — We won the prize thanks to good training, team spirit and strong support of Candidate of Medical Sciences, Director of the Medical Institute Roman Vladimirovich Grachyov and our teachers. Roman Vladimirovich has inspired us to conduct this master class. Its goal is to popularize surgical specialties, transfer experience to undergraduates and involve them in the work of the Student Surgical Club.
Alexander Vasilyevich Petryaev, Head of the Urology Department of the Tula Regional Clinical Oncological Dispensary, Senior lecturer of the Department of Surgical Diseases, Anastasia Valeryevna Palatkina, oncourologist of the Tula Regional Clinical Oncological Dispensary, lecturer of the Department of Surgical Diseases, Nikita Olegovich Sorokin, Head of the Department of X-ray Surgical Treatment of the Tula Region Clinic Hospital, Igor Alekseyevich Chulnikov, a surgeon at the surgical department of the Tula Regional Clinical Hospital, and Vyacheslav Leonidovich Potapov, Candidate of Medical Sciences, Associate Professor of the Department of Surgical Diseases were invited as honorable guests and consultants to the workshop.
In her welcoming speech, Candidate of Technical Sciences, Deputy Director of the Medical Institute for Academic Affairs Irina Yevgenyevna Pervak emphasized that through communication with practitioners, future doctors have the opportunity to enrich their knowledge and gain invaluable experience. She highlighted that she would really like today's master class to give a new impetus to cooperation with experts on the development of the Institute of mentoring.
The student Surgical Club, Irina Evgenievna informed her colleagues, was opened at Tula State University in February 2020. It is successfully operating, and the number of its participants is constantly growing. The club helps students to immerse themselves even deeper into the profession and motivates them to engage in research activities. Today, representatives of the Tula surgical community have the opportunity to see what the students have learned and what results they have achieved.
Igor Frolov, the captain of the TSU Surgery Club team, a sixth-year student, told the guests about the participation of medical students in the All-Russian Surgery Olympiad named after Academician M.I. Perelman and the victory of Mariya Petryaeva and Darya Bultacheeva in the “Pirogov Table” competition. The specialists were offered a video card of the TulSU Student Surgical Club.
After the official part, all the participants were invited to the makeshift operating rooms.
The organizing students acted as operating surgeons.
The operations were performed in eight surgical areas: "Urology" (Mariya Petryaeva), "Anesthesiology and Intensive Care" (fifth-year student Varvara Artyukhina), "Gynecology" (sixth-year student Valeriya Gurtsieva), "Endovideosurgery" (fourth-year student Anastasiya Selivanova), "Ostiosynthesis" (fifth-year student Darya Bultacheeva), "Thoracic Surgery" (Igor Frolov), "Plastic Surgery" (fifth-year student Ali El Eylayan) and "Neurosurgery" (sixth-year student Dmitriy Goryachev).
Each specialist had his own operating team, which, in addition to himself, included an assistant and an operating nurse.
During the operations, practicing doctors advised undergraduates. Moreover, the undergraduates not only observed the process, but also actively asked questions to the guests and members of the Student Surgical Club.
— I want to acquire certain surgical skills, so I came to the event. It is very good that the students from the senior courses have prepared this master class for us! They clearly explained everything to us and answered our questions," said Varvara Zhukova, a second-year student. — I'm attracted to obstetrics and gynecology, but I haven't decided on my specialization yet. In any case, the knowledge gained today will be useful to me in the future.
