TulSU Hosts Its First Masterclass in Ophthalmic Surgery
A masterclass in ophthalmic surgery was held for the first time in the new operating suite at the Tula State University Medical Institute. The session was designed for residents specializing in ophthalmology, as well as students planning to pursue a career in this field.
The masterclass was led by Dachi Gochayevich Chania, Head of the Ocular Microsurgery Department at the D.Y. Vanykin Emergency Hospital, and Valentina Viktorovna Astashova, an ophthalmic surgeon at the Tula Regional Clinical Hospital.
The program combined theoretical instruction with hands-on practice. Under the guidance of the specialists, each participant performed simulated microsurgical procedures using biological tissue (animal specimens).
These sessions were made possible by a new set of ophthalmic equipment, including an expert-class microscope and a slit lamp. This new instrumentation bolsters the ophthalmology residency program, which was launched at the university a year ago. The surgical microscope enables the performance of highly complex procedures on ocular structures. Furthermore, the facility is currently being used to test an original scientific development from the Institute: an anatomical fixation device for the eyeball, designed specifically for microsurgical training.
Practical training at the Institute helps aspiring physicians consolidate their knowledge, refine their instrument-handling techniques, and gain confidence in performing precise surgical maneuvers. There are plans to hold these masterclasses on a regular basis.
The operating suite at the TulSU Medical Institute is open to students, residents, and physicians from various specialties who are looking to acquire new practical skills and enhance their professional expertise.
