English as an Educational Tool
In accordance with Priority 2030 program, Tula State University is implementing a project to introduce English-language educational programs of higher education into the educational process.
The program for the comprehensive training of teachers who will be teaching in English was developed by the team of Foreign Languages Department of Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences. It includes modules on professionally oriented vocabulary, grammar, development of communication skills, and intercultural communication.
As volunteers for role-playing games and imitation of educational situations, she invited the international students from Institute of International Education to participate in teachers' training.
“English-language programs allow foreigners to immediately start studying in a higher education program, bypassing a year of preparation in the Russian language,” Olga Dmitrievna commented on. “But this does not at all decrease the importance of the Russian language in their lives, since in the curriculum the students have classes in Russian in a volume sufficient for their successful integration into the Russian-speaking environment.
The first English-language educational program was the bachelor's program "Economics", profile "Economics and organization of foreign economic activity of organizations". It was launched on September 1, 2022.
In December last year, Olga Dmitrievna passed the baton to the senior teacher of Foreign Languages Department Olga Valerievna Rozanova.
She provides classe in English not only for the teachers of Institute of Law and Management, but also for other departments of the university. Having adopted the experience of her colleague, Olga Valerievna invites international students to her classes.
On January 31, the topic of one such classes was the education systems in different countries. Both teachers and students of Institute of International Education actively communicated in English.
“I became a participant in this project for many reasons,” she admitted. - Firstly, it is necessary for self-development. No wonder they say that the best investment is an investment in your head. In addition, it is very important for me to overcome my fear when communicating with international students. And, the best way to overcome your fear is to look straight into the eyes of it. I am sure that English will help me in preparing for the defense of my PhD thesis. And finally, in English, I will be also teaching the subject "Fundamentals of Defectology in Social and Professional Spheres."
A fourth-year med-student of Institute of International Education Mustafa Abdulhalem is from Iraq.
According to Mustafa, he learned English as a little kid from his mother his mother, who used to work as an English teacher. And his father, an engineer by profession, also knows English very well.
Mustafa wants to become a surgeon. The young man is convinced that a real doctor should be a diversified personality.
— With great desire I take part in this fascinating and very useful project! - the fourth-year student said. — I enjoy and help teachers and other students to improve their English.
“In the future, it is planned to launch English-language programs in architecture and IT,” Olga Dmitrievna Gladkova added.
